Commercial Architecture Project

The Northport-East Northport Library has elected to construct a new state-of-the art library building in a new location. The purpose of this project is to enhance the existing downtown area with an educational and entertainment resource and create a community hub for all residents. The facility should include modern amenities and flexibility for future use. This project will involve design of a new building as well as development of the surrounding site.

This design includes many inspirations from books. Like books, the building includes configurations of books. The building is differentiated in two side; one side includes stand up books that provide gorgeous views from and to the park. The facade of each "book" consists of curtain walls. On the other side, west side, the building includes the form of a faced-down book that is open at the middle section. This appearance is shown with triple glazed curtain panels that also includes exterior wood panels, which provides the interior with solar shading. The library consists of large curtain walls that are more transparent to the north where direct solar penetration is minimal, while the facade is facing the south at a more bold, impenetrable, heavily shaded cover to protect from direct sunlight.
